Five reasons to stock up on honey this winterPosted on: 07 December 2017 by 50connect editorial
It doesn't just taste great on your breakfast, honey is packed full of health and beauty benefits explains Emily Abbott.
Slow release energy
When your energy is flagging and the cold weather is encouraging you to turn to the biscuit tin for a pick me up – have a spoonful or two of honey instead. It’s a completely natural complex, slow release energy boost with a delicious long lasting taste that will satiate any sweet tooth.
It’s a natural medicine
Honey helps to keep you healthy and ready to fight winter bugs: raw honey has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It really is a delicious spoonful of medicine!
Soothes dry skin
For those that suffer with winter dry skin and eczema, then honey can help to heal it. Try spreading a thin layer of raw honey over the affected area and cover with a dressing to stop the stickiness rubbing off everywhere. Raw honey naturally crystalises (which is a good sign and shows it’s intact and has not been filtered or pasteurised) so you may need to gently warm it to no more than 35 degrees, the temperature inside the hive, to keep all the active ingredients intact.
Helps fight sore throats
Winter means colds and tickly coughs for many of us. Honey in warm water (again, not too hot otherwise the enzymes will be killed off) and gargled or slowly drunk and allowed to slip down your throat is incredibly soothing.
It leaves skin smooth and soft
Honey’s healing properties are now recognised by the beauty industry, yet the majority of these products come at a cost. However, you do not need to fork out to enjoy honey’s facial benefits. Using a raw honey at home and combining this with oats to make a grainy texture acting as a natural exfoliator and leaves skin beautifully soft.
