Since 2012, we’ve been working with families struggling with poor mental health, substance misuse and domestic abuse in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.
With the help of gifts in Wills, Big Manchester is pioneering a new, holistic approach – one which has the power to make childhoods safer and happier for years to come.
There for the whole family
Big Manchester is unique – and not about quick fixes. We can work with families for up to two years, helping them become more resilient and transforming lives. Gifts in Wills help make it possible. Here’s how…
- Supporting children
Gifts left in Wills mean our key workers have the time to build secure and trusting relationships. They work with primary age children in play-based therapy sessions, supporting them to understand themselves, their emotions and the world around them. And we reach out to schools, fostering an understanding and positive environment.
- Helping parents
Big Manchester parents often struggle with their own traumatic experiences. A therapeutic approach helps them to deal with that trauma, manage mental ill health and tackle issues around substance misuse.
Our key workers are fierce advocates for parents, supporting them to get the help, the housing, the education or employment that they need.
- Empowering families
We bring together families through joint therapeutic sessions and shared experiences.
We also provide a small personal budget for fun activities, which gives families freedom and choice and helps to reduce social isolation. And the support doesn’t stop when the programme ends.
Big Manchester families benefit from long-term peer support, and a safety net for the future. That’s the true power of gifts in Wills.
The Big Manchester Project proves just what can be achieved when we come together to support families – and protect childhoods.

A big future
Over the coming years, we’ll be expanding the project to reach more and more families across the city. At the same time, we’ll be using our experience to influence policy, both local and national.
What we’re learning in Manchester could have a big impact – and help to improve our approach to tackling some of the most challenging childhood experiences.
Why gifts in Wills matter
With the support of people like you, we can build stronger families, and happier childhoods. Nearly half of all money fundraised for Barnardo’s comes from gift in Wills – without these gifts, so much of our work with vulnerable children would not be possible. What better way to remember the cause whose values you share by leaving a Gift in your Will.
A gift in your Will is a special way to mark the experiences that shape you – and pass on the gift of childhood to future generations.
