Half-term for many means grandchildren and thinking of cost -effective ways of entertaining them. Here is a simple solution that, while messy, will keep the little terrors occupied and eager to taste the end product.
These treats are a perfect holiday filler, they are super gooey and luxuriantly rich; they'll destroy your diet but will cement your position as uber grandparent in young eyes.
The amounts in this recipe are child dependent – if there are several, stick to amounts listed below. If there are only one or two, it would be wise to halve the amounts – otherwise there is a risk that overindulgence and sickness will ensue.
200g Rice crispies
200g of dark chocolate (Min 50% cocoa solid content)
6 tbsp Golden Syrup
Take the chocolate and break into chunks. Find yourself a pan and a heat resistant bowl; fill the pan with approximately 1.5 inches of water and bring to the boil. Turn down the heat to simmer and place the bowl with the chocolate in the pan. Stir the chocolate as it melts until it has a smooth non-lumpy consistency. Add the butter and golden syrup stirring continuously.
Into a large mixing bowl add your rice crispies. Pour in your chocolate mixture and fold in while the mixture remains warm. Once all the contents of the bowl have been well covered, you can start the process of dishing out.
Depending on how clean you wish to keep your kitchen, there are two ways to do this:
The first option involves a large baking tray and no children. Tip the mixture onto the tray and spread to an even depth then take a bread knife and score the patty into a checker board pattern.
The second option is only advisable if you are a glutton for housework. On a large baking tray place your cupcake cases – introduce children to the mixture and allow them to fill the cases. Expect natural wastage of about one third due to spillage and over-eager consumption.
Once complete transfer your crispies to the fridge and allow to set for one hour.
