With a steady rise in incidences of breast cancer, you’d be wise to check the ingredients of your current deodorant.

Scientists are investigating potential links between some of the chemical compounds in common antiperspirants and the rising rates of breast cancer. New research, published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology suggests a possible link between aluminium and zirconium compounds and the development of tumours.

In lab tests these chemicals have been seen to cause mutations in DNA that could lead to cancerous growth. They may also disrupt hormone levels. Britain >>has one of the world’s highest rates of breast cancer; despite our chilly climate, Britons are also among the biggest users of deodorants with the UK spending over £300 million a year on products.

Weleda 'sall-natural Sage Deodorant (RRP £4.65 100ml) is made from carefully chosen essential oils which counteract unpleasant body odours without inhibiting the important functions of the skin. Sage Deodorant is free from both aluminium and zirconium compounds which suppress the natural processes of perspiration, important to the body for disposing of waste substances as well as regulating temperature.

Most antiperspiants work by blocking the pores to prevent sweating. Instead, Weleda deodorants use plant extracts or essential oils effectively and naturally to disarm body odours. Sage Deodorant has a sophisticated fragrance with subtle woody undertones, suitable for both men and women. Oil of Sage (Salvia officinalis) and Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) are combined with essential oils of Clary Sage concrete, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Oakmoss absolute, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Thyme and Ylang Ylang to create a herbal scent reminiscent of a shady walk through a Mediterranean grove on a summer’s day.

In fact Weleda deodorants contain no hidden nasties - every single ingredient is listed on the bottle - and are free from gentially modified materials. Furthermore, Weleda use organic plant ingredients – grown biodynamically wherever possible – to avoid chemical pesticides or sprays. And with no animal testing, they are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Packaged in curvy recyclable glass bottles, their pump-action sprays are of course ozone-safe.

A handy new 30ml travel size Sage Deodorant (RRP £2.35) will be available at the end of the year - useful for a sports bag, handbag or the car glove compartment - from independent health stores and pharmacies, or mail order from Weleda Direct on 0115 9448222 or visit www.weleda.co.uk.
