If you are considering one of the many injectable treatments in pursuit of beautiful lips, don't be completely deterred by Lesley Ash's recent disaster. Choose your lip treatment with care and you too can have the perfect pout.
Wendy Lewis, international surgery and skincare consultant and author of Wrinkle Rescue says "The mouth can be far more suggestive than the eyes. Lips should look natural and soft, not over-blown or exaggerated. Lip rejuvenation via the needle can enhance your lips in a subtle way but choose your medical aesthetics practitioner with care and don't let them get carried away. Stick with natural materials in the lips, like Perlane, that leave them feeling soft and natural - synthetic materials are not tissue friendly and can lump up and can leave your lips feeling hard. Most of all lips have to be able to pass the kiss test!"
Collagen injections are still a popular treatment choice but they are gradually being superseded by Perlane, a newer injectable treatment which lasts much longer and leaves your lips feeling natural and soft. The subtle effects can be seen immediately and last around six to nine months.
The big advantage of Perlane is that it is a non-permanent and natural treatment. The fluid injected is a man-made version of a gel, hyaluronic acid, a tissue friendly substance that occurs naturally in the body. This gently, but instantly, fills out the skin to plump up the lips.
Collagen and other permanent synthetic fillers augment the lips which may lead to ridges forming, over time, beneath the skin - leaving lips feeling hard and not very natural.
Lips start to thin out as you age but Perlane helps lips stay young looking and smooth. It can increase their definition by enhancing the vermilion border around the mouth, which means that lipstick and lip-gloss stay put and do not bleed into the skin. Perlane also diminishes fine lines around the mouth, which can be especially noticeable in smokers.
Lip enhancement with Perlane costs around £300. The treatment is quick and downtime is minimal. The inconvenience of a skin test can be avoided with Perlane because it is a non-animal product, unlike collagen. The effects of Perlane also last up to twice as long as collagen.
A top up injection of Perlane is necessary once a year to maintain the effects. When top up treatments cease, Perlane biodegrades naturally and safely in the skin - the gel simply disappears.
