Ensuring the gift of childhood for future generations

Posted on: 04 November 2020 by 50connect Promotions

Former Barnardo's boy, David, remembers his childhood and pledges to leave a gift in his Will to the charity that transformed his life.

David's storyGifts in Wills help charities like Barnardo's protect, support and nurture the UK's most vulnerable children. In 2020, this funding has helped the charity to assist vulnerable children, young adults and their families through the isolation, anxiousness and disruption of Covid-19 lockdowns.

While many of us have a Will written and stored, if it is not kept up to date, it will not necessarily reflect our current concerns or priorities. Whatever our circumstances we should aim to review the content of our Wills at least once every five years, as this will ensure our wishes are carried out, those we love are protected and the causes we care about are remembered. A gift in a Will, however small, can have a hugely positive impact on those who need help most, as David explains.

David and his twin brother, Ian, grew up in Barnardo’s care. They were just babies when they were taken from their mother because she wasn’t married. But Barnardo’s gave them shelter, education, and a childhood.

“My brother Ian and I were just six months old when we were taken in by Barnardo’s.

“For those first few years, we were looked after by a young Barnardo’s nursery nurse called Miss Bourne. She was the first family we knew.

Barnardo’s were my childhood, and I will always be a Barnardo’s boy. That’s why I’ve remembered them in my Will...

“As we got older, we were moved around a bit. We had good times and bad, but Barnardo’s gave us the right values. And they always watched out for us. When we were 18 and our landlord was stealing from us, Barnardo’s stepped in.

“And in all that time, Miss Bourne kept in touch. As children, she’d visit and take us out for the day. And as she got older, we did the same for her – right up until she died at the age of 95.

“People ask me why I don’t just forget about Barnardo’s. But how can I? Barnardo’s were my childhood, and I will always be a Barnardo’s boy. That’s why I’ve remembered them in my Will, so that more children like us are not forgotten.”
