The RSPB need our help with the world’s biggest ever wildlife survey, the Big Garden Birdwatch. Hone your bird-watching skills with our nifty bird quiz, just jot down the names of the numbered birds – answers at the bottom of the page!

RSPB bird quizThe RSPB hosts this event annually with last year seeing over half a million participants record 8.5 million birds across 280,000 gardens in the UK. But this year they want even more – and that’s where you come in, because the more results they get in, the better picture they can paint.

You don’t have to be an expert, all you need is a spare hour in which you can watch your garden for visitors. It’s a great thing to do with the grandkids, as you can teach them about wildlife (or they can teach you) while you help the RSPB with imperative research. You don’t even need to leave the comfort of your home, staying inside means that not only will you keep warm, but you won’t disturb the wildlife in its natural habitat.

Big Garden Birdwatch

Past Big Garden Birdwatches have enabled the RSPB to embark upon studies to identify the decline of certain species, as well as invest in ways to help them recover. The house sparrow showed the biggest decline, as the results showed that in 1979 an average garden saw 10 house sparrows where as in 2010 that number is down to just 3.7.

To do your bit for garden birds, simply spend one hour over the weekend 29/30 January 2011 counting the birds in your garden or local park and record the highest number of every bird species seen at any one time.

For further information and online resources to help you with your birdwatch, visit the RSPB website, An online results form will be available from Saturday 29 January until 18 February 2011.

Alternatively, call 0300 456 8330 to request a Big Garden Birdwatch form to be sent to you (calls charged at standard rate). The hotline number will be in operation from 15 November 2010 to 28 January 2011
