Have an adventure of a lifetime with these fantastic volunteer holidays throughout the world.

Think last minute bookings and the chances are you’ll think flights to Falaraki and beach breaks in Benidorm, but for more adventurous souls there are plenty of unconventional offers out there. For those who fancy getting away from it all this summer, but don’t want to follow the crowds, volunteer travel specialist i-to-i has come up with a few late deals with a difference:

 

South Africa: Experrience a summer like no other, working in a South African lion cub reserve near Johannesburg. Tasks can change according to the volunteer’s interests, but could involve feeding lion cubs, exercising the animals and maintaining their living areas.

South Africa: For those who aren’t into big cats, there are still a few places available at i-to-i’s penguin conservation projects in Cape Town. Volunteers can spend time feeding, cleaning and exercising the birds and, in some cases, helping with vital research.

Honduras (La Esperanza): For folk who like getting their hands dirty! This is a truly rewarding project working with Save the Children to build and decorate new homes and schools. Volunteers spend just four hours a day on their projects, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the local colour.

Honduras (La Tigra): At La Tigra National Park, near the Honduras capital of Tegucigalpa, volunteers carry out a wealth of conservation tasks, ranging from working in he plant nursery to building bridges and pathways, to carrying out patrols with site wardens.

Duration: 1-3 weeks.

Honduras (Lancetilla): Alternatively, there are still a few places left for the summer conservation projects in Lancetilla, one of the largest tropical botanical gardens in the world. Work ranges from assisting with the botanical collections to restoring and maintaining pathways and signs. Volunteers may also be+ +/asked to help improve the wardens’ English.
Departs: July / August.
Duration: 1-3 weeks.

Costa Rica: Working with Habitat for Humanity, volunteers play a vital role in helping to build new houses. Depending on the stage of construction, visitors could actually end up doing almost any job towards completing the homes, aiding the estimated 150,000 Costa Rican people who live in substandard housing.

Kenya: Volunteers can help a local project meet their goal of planting 3 million trees at the foot of Africa’s second largest mountain, Mount Kenya. Work can include planting and preparing seedlings, checking and mending fencing and cleaning up trails.

7/Kenya: Located near the Lake Nakuru National Park and 160 km west of Nairobi, volunteers can enjoy a unique experience working at a hilltop nursery. Tasks include preparation of seedlings, planting (during August) and working with the forest department staff in any other ways needed at the time.
