Latin BreaksPosted on: 26 March 2008 by Gareth Hargreaves
Looking for an exciting new tourist destination? Latin America could be the place you are looking for.
Latin America is fast becoming the new ‘in’ travel destination not only for backpackers on their year off but for holidaymakers looking for somewhere more unusual to visit. The UK winter is one of the best times to visit much of the region, especially southern Chile and Argentina, which can be difficult to reach during their winter months.
The countries of South Amerca, Central America and Mexico offer an intriguing blend of ancient cultures, unique wildlife, steamy tropical forests and world heritage archaeological sights, combined with vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, stunning national parks and glistening sandy beaches.
All the countries are unique, but held together by a common history shaped by the invasion of the Spanish Conquistadors who have left their colonial influence throughout the region, as well as their language.
Except of course Brazil where it was the Portuguese who got there first and have subsequently left their mark.
People are venturing to Latin America for a number of reasons. Those looking for adventure will find fantastic diving, hiking, skiing and white water rafting.
If simple relaxation is the name of the game there are plenty of secluded beaches throughout the region and wine connoisseurs can sample local the local tipple in the superb wineries of Argentina and Chile.
Walking enthusiasts can trek through hot tropical rain forests and climb volcanoes and culture vultures can learn about the ancient civilisations of the Inca’s, Aztec’s and Mayan’s, take a city break in one of the capitals or spend time living with a local family and learning Spanish.
Highlights of the region include the Amazon rainforest, the sultry city of Buenos Aires, the Inca trail to Machu Pichu, the Iguacu Falls bordering Brazil and Argentina, the impressive Perito Moreno glacier in Chile, the amazing white salt plains or Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the pyramids of Guatemala and Mexico, the world’s second largest barrier reef off the coast Belize and the extraordinary Galapagos Islands with their unique wildlife, to name just a few.
