Thanks to our brilliant supporters, lifeboat crews and lifeguards of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution were able to save 329 lives in 2018.

RNLI lifeboat crews protect hundreds of communities around the UK and Ireland through our 24-hour search and rescue service. To do so, they rely on the safest, most reliable lifeboats and modern stations to launch from. With an average of 26 callouts a day (based on 2018 rescues), there’s most likely a lifeboat out right now.

Our lifeguards patrol over 240 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands. In 2018, they assisted 32,207 people. RNLI lifeguards are qualified in lifesaving and casualty care, highly trained and fit.

Our Flood Rescue Team helps those affected by flooding, with volunteers including lifeboat crew, who are trained in swift water rescue.

More than a rescue service

Together, RNLI crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives since 1824, but we’re more than a rescue service. We influence, supervise and educate people too.

Our Water Safety teams explain the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast. And our international teams work with like-minded organisations to help tackle drowning in communities at risk all around the world.

The vast majority of RNLI people are volunteers. From our brave lifeboat crews to our amazing fundraisers and generous supporters, we are all one crew with a common purpose – saving lives at sea.

Why we need your support

As a charity, we rely on legacies and donations to fund our lifeboats. Our volunteer lifesavers give their time for free, but they need training, well-maintained equipment, lifeboats and shore facilities.

More and more people are visiting the coast and needing our help, and too many are still drowning. Our lifeboat crews are the busiest they’ve ever been, it’s a Perfect Storm. Gifts to the RNLI, no matter how much, will make a lifesaving difference. Not only to the people we rescue and their loved ones, but to the crew and their families too. And means we will be there for you and yours for generations to come.
